Ski skills: become a better skier!

NEW Cross country ski course

We promise that you will become a better Nordic skier during this course.

Our innovative approach integrates outstanding ski coaching with ski-specific Pilates to support understanding, learning and long term improvement.

We love to work with ski enthusiasts with many different ambitions:

  • experienced skiers who wants to take your skiing to the next level and have fun in the process
  • skiers who wants to enjoy longer ski tours and ski more efficiently
  • skiers who would like to take on one of the classic ski races

Ours is a unique approach in that it gives recreational skiers access to coaching usually reserved for ski athletes (our guests are keen holiday skiers). We aim for the week to be social and stimulating, helping you to transform the foundations of your skiing and enhance your understanding and performance as a Nordic skier.

Whatever level you are at now we will help you develop the fundamental skills that are vital to becoming a more effective skier. All skiers who have achieved the highest level of performance have similar qualities: their posture is good, their balance is excellent, their movement patterns are good and they are strong. All of these fundamental elements can be improved (dare we say it, whatever your age). After a full six days of skiing you will leave with a good understanding of how you can continue to improve your skiing whether on or off snow. We can help you to become a more effective skier and enjoy the process!

Course programme

Day 1. Arrival

This evening we will meet at the hotel and have dinner together with the coaches. We will talk about the week ahead however we'll have a more detailed briefing over coffee the following morning. After a day of travelling this is an evening to meet everyone and settle into your week. Dinner times in Norway tend to be reasonably early and at Venabu the evening meal begins at 18.30.

Day 2.

am. We'll meet after breakfast for our briefing before gathering in the ski waxing room to wax the skis and prepare for skiing.  This morning we'll have a short ski to help you find your ski legs and see where you are with your current skiing.

pm. Understand and develop the foundations: good posture, balance and weight transfer through off snow exercises followed by on snow activity.

16.00 Pilates-based integrative movement and recovery session to reaffirm your learning and prepare for the following day on your skis.

Evening: Ewen will talk about ski waxing for cross country skiing: how it helps us and how to get it right. Ewen will aim to demystify what can sometimes seem to be a baffling aspect of nordic skiing.

Day 3.

am. Today we focus on the different techniques of classic skiing. During a ski tour we will break down the classic ski techniques and develop your understanding of the correct movement patterns.

pm. Integrated exercises to improve your movement patterns in the different techniques.

16.00 Pilates-based movement awareness and recovery session.

Day 4.

am. Building on yesterday’s experience we will use training and coaching of ski techniques indoors to refine your understanding and then transfer this outdoors onto skis. We will video the ski session.

pm. Using video review we will identify the fundamental elements of your skiing for further development. Once we have created an action plan we will do further practice indoors and then a ski session to consolidate.

16.00 Pilates-based integrative movement and recovery session.

Evening: Mindfulness for skiing. In this informal session Joy will introduce mindfulness, what it is (and isn't) and how it may help you to enjoy your skiing more.

Day 5.  Cross country skiing hill skills. A change today as we take the time to focus on all aspects of cross country ascent and descent including the following techniques: step turns; plough, plough turning and herringbone.

16.00 Pilates-based movement awareness and recovery session.

Day 6.  A long ski tour to enjoy and consolidate.

16.00 Pilates-based integrative movement, awareness and recovery session.

Evening: Ewen will host a session for anyone curious about ski racing. We find that clients who love their skiing are often curious about races such as the Birkebeiner so this is an opportunity to find out more and have your questions answered by an experienced coach. We will talk about the classic races, why you might want to take on such a challenge, where to start and how to begin preparing for your first race.

Day 7.  During the day we will accommodate what you wish to work on individually and create an action plan that will include your physical and mental training along with the technical skiing development.

Day 8. Departure day

This itinerary may change to adapt to snow and weather conditions and to the needs of the group.

Although we don’t include skate skiing in this programme if you bring your own skate skis and would like a skate training session then we can include this in the programme.

Each day starts with a short ski waxing session to prepare our skis and there will be a short ski specific warm up to prepare ourselves: to tune in and enjoy the day on your skis. We will finish the ski day with recovery and stretching.

Follow up session:

In the two months following your course we include an additional follow up session with the coaches. This could be feedback on a ski or rollerski video that you send us or a Skype session to discuss how your skiing and training have developed since the course, the choice is yours. Typically the session would be up to one hour long.

Your coaches:

Ewen Martin has been teaching skiing for 30 years: Alpine; Telemark; ski touring and Nordic in which he is an International Ski Teacher.
